Media Release:
For anyone who’s ever squinted at their device in bright sunlight or had to rest their eyes after night-time browsing, TCL Electronics Australia (TCL) is now offering a better way to read.
The leading electronics manufacturer has today launched its latest NXTPAPER range in Australia, designed with TCL’s pioneering display technology that replaces the glowing screen with the closest thing to the printed page. The two mobiles and three tablets entering the market feature the NXTPAPER Key on the side of each smartphone and tablet, turning them into e-readers for Aussies looking to catch up on their novel or the news with markedly reduced glare.
The five new devices mark a new chapter in how Australians read, providing greater visual clarity and eye comfort for both daily tasks and longer reading sessions. Products available at major Australian retailers – such as JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and Harvey Norman – include:
- TCL P80 Ultra smartphone (RRP: $999)
- TCL P80 Pro smartphone (RRP: $799)
- TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER tablet (RRP: $1,299)
- TCL TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER tablet (RRP: $599)
- TCL TAB A1 NXTPAPER tablet (RRP: $449)
TCL’s NXTPAPER Key allows consumers to easily move between three distinct display modes to suit their surroundings. These include Regular Mode, Paper Ink Mode for reduced colour, and Max Ink Mode for a monochrome, minimalist display that silences notifications and extends battery life for longer, distraction-free reading.
“Australians are spending more time looking at screens than ever, and a lot of that is reading – whether it be emails, news, books or social media – but most smartphone and tablet screen technologies still aren’t built for it,” says Kurt Bonnici, Telecommunications Business Manager for TCL Electronics Australia and New Zealand. “Until now, people have had to choose – a vivid, high-quality screen that tires your eyes, or a paper-like e-reader that sacrifices colour and everything else your phone can do.
“Whether you’re browsing in the midday sun, or in bed last thing at night, you shouldn’t have to compromise. That’s where NXTPAPER technology comes in – with the NXTPAPER Key, you can quickly and easily switch your phone or tablet into a paper-like reading mode, without having to keep a second device at hand.”
Performance Meets Comfort with the P80 Series

TCL’s P80 Series is the first smartphone range to combine the company’s NXTPAPER technology with a 1.5K AMOLED display. The series delivers exceptional eye comfort with clarity, smoothness and true-to-life colour accuracy, covering 100% of the DCI-P3 colour range, with deep contrast and up to 3,200 nits of peak brightness.
The TCL P80 Pro smartphone (RRP: $799) offers a balanced combination of a 1.5K NXTPAPER AMOLED display, 50MP large sensor main camera, and 256GB storage.
The TCL P80 Ultra smartphone (RRP: $999) takes these features further with a dedicated 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera, giving users greater freedom to frame distant subjects, portraits and street scenes.

A New Generation of NXTPAPER Tablets

On tablets, TCL’s NXTPAPER technology is built around the company’s 3A Crystal Shield Glass. Its three coatings – anti-glare, anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint – reduce smudges and mirroring off the screen. Together, these technologies create a clearer, more paper-like display for a more natural and comfortable viewing experience. The range’s advanced anti-glare etching technology also reduces sparkle for cleaner visuals, with balanced brightness to ensure the screen remains consistent regardless of the tablet’s viewing angle.
The TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER tablet (RRP: $1,299) is TCL’s first ever eNote device. Designed for work and study, it offers a paper-like display, natural precision writing and AI-driven productivity tools, including real-time transcription, translation and note-taking capabilities. It includes TCL’s T-Pen Pro with subtle haptic feedback to mirror the friction of real writing, alongside eraser functionality and a smart side button that streamlines workflows by allowing bookmarking of recordings, saving on-screen content, and organising files.
