Logitech Urges Australians to ‘Think Small’ About Desk Discomfort This Global Ergonomics Month

Media Release:

With Global Ergonomics Month underway, a workspace expert is urging Australians to ‘think small’ to avoid potential pain and discomfort at their desks.

Global Logitech Ergo research* has found that 58% of office workers experience pain or discomfort by the end of the workday, rising to 65% among those aged 18 to 34. With backs, necks and wrists cited as particular concerns, Marisol Vargas, Senior Category Portfolio Manager for Logitech Personal Workspace Solutions ANZ, is highlighting how Aussies can buck worldwide trends and be at their best at work.

Specifically, Vargas is focusing on how respondents to the Logitech survey overlooked mice and keyboards as potential solutions to the problem, instead pointing to furniture-based fixes such as ergonomic chairs and standing desks. With these results in mind, she is encouraging Australians to ‘think small’ when it comes to improving at-desk ergonomics.

“Workspace comfort isn’t a seasonal trend, but Global Ergonomics Month is an ideal time to give it the spotlight it deserves,” says Vargas. “Yet as this data shows, they are possibly blaming the wrong thing when they finish the day stiff and sore. Australians need to think small and consider what’s on their desks if they’re to avoid these issues that are affecting workers worldwide.
“Our hands are on mice and keyboards for eight hours a day, and if these tools don’t fit, they make every task that little bit more difficult. Swapping to mice suited to specific hand sizes and keyboards that put elbows and shoulders in a more natural position might not be as big a change as a new desk or chair, but the impact of these smaller tweaks soon adds up.”

Vargas went on to advise employers to avoid seeing ergonomics as a one-size-fits-all proposition, warning that defaulting to identical peripherals for the whole office overlooks individual employee needs. With hybrid working now the norm and many people working across several setups, she argues that peripherals should be prioritised as integral to business performance.

“At-desk ergonomics shouldn’t be filed as an office perk like free fruit or Friday drinks,” she concludes. “A comfortable working environment is crucial to ensuring people are more present, focused and productive.
“Getting the right tools into the right hands should be a business priority and it’s one of the simplest investments a business can make in its people. This is something we’re emphasising this Global Ergonomics Month and beyond – that small, intentional at-desk adjustments on the individual and company-wide level are instrumental in helping everyone get to 5pm without aches and pains.”
