In a landmark announcement, Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s long-anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market. Boasting a thin foldable design, dual Super Retina XDR displays, and a custom-engineered hinge mechanism, the iPhone Duo aims to blend pocketable convenience with the expansive canvas of a tablet.
A Dual-Screen Breakthrough
Closed, the iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display that provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro in a compact, one-handed form factor. Opened, it unfolds into a 7.6-inch inner display—50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max—making it the largest display ever on an iPhone.
Both displays share the same aspect ratio to ensure visual continuity when transitioning between folded and unfolded states. Key display features include:
- Nano-Texture Finish: A matte surface layer on the inner display designed to minimize glare, reflections, and crease visibility.
- ProMotion & Always On: High-refresh-rate performance and low-power ambient display capabilities on both screens.
- 3,000 Nits Peak Brightness: Engineered for high outdoor visibility.
- Apple Pencil Support: Later this year, the iPhone Duo will support the Apple Pencil (USB-C) across both displays.
- Under-Display FaceTime Camera: Positioned beneath the inner panel to offer an uninterrupted viewing experience.
Engineered for Durability
Addressing common durability concerns surrounding foldable devices, Apple constructed the iPhone Duo with a Grade 5 titanium enclosure, a mirror-polished finish, and a 3D-printed micro-blasted hinge cover.
The precision hinge utilizes over 100 components to balance opening resistance and center-screen support. Internally, a multi-layer stack combining polymer cover layers, high-strength glass, and a titanium baseplate allows display layers to glide past one another to relieve bending stress. The unit carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance.
Advanced Cameras & Foldable-Exclusive Modes
The camera system is built around a 48MP Fusion Main camera with zero shutter lag, a large sensor with sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, and a 2x optical-quality telephoto crop. It is paired with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with macro capabilities and a Center Stage front camera.
The folding form factor introduces several new camera modes:
- Smart Take: AI models analyze scenes in real time to automatically trigger shots when subjects pose.
- Duo Preview & Outer Display Selfies: Subjects can view live previews on the outer display while photos are taken using the high-resolution rear cameras.
- Kid Cue: Plays animations on the outer display to keep children looking at the lens.

Reimagined Software: iOS 27 & Siri AI
The iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27, optimized specifically for multi-screen and foldable layouts:
- Split View Multitasking: Run two apps side-by-side or two windows of the same app.
- Relocated UI Elements: Lock Screen controls, app docks, and system status indicators nestle along the vertical margins to maximize central content space
- StandBy Expansion: Functions as an ambient smart display when propped open, featuring customizable clock faces, shared photo albums, calendar views, and widget panels—even when not actively charging.
The device debuts Siri AI, an overhaul of Apple’s assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. Built on deep personal context understanding and on-screen awareness, Siri AI can execute multi-step actions across messages, mail, and apps.

Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process technology:
