In a major move toward physical game preservation and user flexibility, Microsoft has officially revealed a landmark feature for Xbox players: turning physical disc ownership into digital game entitlements.
Announced via Xbox Wire by Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation, the upcoming system allows gamers to insert supported Xbox physical discs into an Xbox Series X or Xbox One console to claim a permanent digital entitlement.
Here is everything you need to know about how the new system works, what perks it unlocks, and when you can try it out.
How Digital Disk Entitlements Work
For decades, console gamers have had to choose between the physical tangibility of disc collections and the modern convenience of digital libraries. Microsoft’s new initiative aims to bridge that divide without stripping away your physical media.
The process is straightforward:
- Insert & Claim: Pop a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into your disc-drive-equipped console.
- Launch to Unlock: Launching the game triggers the system to register a digital entitlement directly to your Microsoft account.
- Enjoy Digital Perks: Once claimed, you unlock ecosystem-wide perks like Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming (where supported) allowing you to stream or play your library across compatible PCs, mobile devices, and handhelds without needing the disc in the drive.
- Keep Your Disc: Crucially, your physical disc continues to work as normal, retaining its place in your physical media shelf or collection.
A Massive Win for Game Preservation
As gaming shifts increasingly toward digital-only distribution and digital storefront closures remain a persistent threat to gaming history, game preservation has become a hot topic among enthusiasts.
According to Microsoft, this feature forms a critical pillar of their broader commitment to ensuring players maintain access to their software collections as technology, hardware formats, and distribution channels evolve over time.
While not every single physical title will be supported immediately on day one, Microsoft confirmed that the roll-out will start with thousands of Xbox titles, with additional games scheduled to join the roster over time.
Rollout Schedule & Xbox Insider Testing
Gamers won’t have to wait long to give the feature a spin:
- Xbox Insider Testing: Rolling out to participants in the Xbox Insider program starting August 31, 2026.
- Public Release: Broader availability will follow testing and feedback collection from the Insider community.
If you are an active Xbox Insider, you will be able to test digital disc claiming via the Xbox Insider Hub app on Xbox consoles or PC starting next week.
