Heading to Tokyo Game Show 2026: The Indie Games You Can’t Miss

Tokyo Game Show 2026 Celebrates 30 Years With Web Portal Launch, Creators Lounge, and Global Ambassadors

With September rapidly approaching, the hype for Tokyo Game Show 2026 is reaching a fever pitch. As I pack my bags for Japan and gear up for a trip to Makuhari Messe, I’m kicking off a series of TGS pre-release roundups highlighting the show floor’s most promising titles.

While major publishers will inevitably dominate the main halls, some of the most creative, bizarre, and visually captivating experiences are tucked away in the indie corners and regional pavilions. Whether you’re making the trip in person or following the announcements from home, here are a few standout booths and titles you need to keep on your radar for TGS 2026.

Cheeky Cheerhythm

Cheeky Cheerrgythm

The Indie Game Corner at Tokyo Game Show 2026 is always a goldmine for unorthodox concepts, but developer Yabukaradoo’s upcoming title might take the prize for the show floor’s most unapologetically bold premise.

Cheeky Cheerhythm is a physical fitness rhythm game with a unique twist: it pairs high-energy motion-controlled gameplay with a constant barrage of playful verbal abuse.

Game Overview & Features

Players take on the role of “Sensei,” tasked with coaching high schooler Iroha Shishikura to refine her cheer dance routines, rebuild her school sports club’s reputation, and ultimately earn her respect.

  • Dual Gyro Controls: Gameplay utilizes two motion controllers as pom-poms. Players must physically wave and move to the beat to execute cheer routines.
  • Asanagi Visuals × Live2D Animation: Character designs are provided by illustrator Asanagi, brought to life through real-time Live2D animation. Iroha’s visual reactions and movements shift dynamically based on performance accuracy.
  • Dynamic Audio Feedback: Voice actor Hinata Yuka delivers over 600 fully original taunts (including gems like “Weakling… Trying so hard… Your face is all red”). The game creates an intentional contrast between her tough-talking demeanor and her body’s obedient reactions to precise rhythm inputs.

Show Floor Availability & Playtest Details

Attendees heading to Makuhari Messe can test the prototype firsthand in the Indie Game Corner.

Developer: Yabukaradoo

  • Location: Turnkey Booth 09-C10 (Halls 9–11, South Edge near the Hall 9 entrance from the Food Court)
  • Demo Duration: Approximately 10 minutes
  • Booth Bonus: Players who participate in the live demo and complete a session will receive a TGS-exclusive limited novelty gift.

Whether you’re looking for a genuine cardio workout or just want to see if you have the stamina to make Iroha “understand,” Cheeky Cheerhythm promises to be one of the most eccentric interactive demos at TGS this year.

Taiwanese indie developer HIGHFIVE DOG has announced an ambitious international exhibition run for City God Alice, the studio’s debut commercial title. Ahead of its showcase across global events—including Gamescom, Busan Indie Connect Festival, and Tokyo Game Show—the developer has launched the game’s official Steam store page, where players can now add it to their wishlist

Story & Premise

City God Alice is a narrative-driven RPG rooted in Taiwanese temple culture, local urban legends, and ancient folklore. Players follow the journey of Alice, an acting City God tasked with managing a local temple. With only a single year left to live, you must protect the sanctuary that was acquired at the cost of your own life, while simultaneously untangling a dark family curse and the mystery surrounding a legendary, monstrous fish spirit.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

The game merges several distinct genres to create a unique gameplay loop centered around spiritual management and investigation:

  • Temple Management: Oversee and maintain the operations of the City God temple to strengthen your foundation and resources.
  • Side-Scrolling Exploration & Puzzles: Venture through atmospheric environments and solve environmental puzzles to uncover hidden truths.
  • Tactical Turn-Based Combat: Engage in strategic battles against supernatural forces, utilizing tactical positioning and squad abilities to defeat hostile spirits.

The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) is bringing a cohort of distinct indie developers to Makuhari Messe from September 17 to 21, showcasing the depth and variety of Norway’s interactive landscape. Attendees and industry professionals can visit the official “Norwegian Games” booth in Main Hall 8 during both Business and Public days to meet the teams and representatives from the NFI—including Head of Feature Films & MEDIA Desk Kaja Hench Dyrlie and game advisers Magnus Tellefsen, Audun Rodem, and Jens Erik Vaaler.

Featured Showcase Titles

  • Life Below (Megapop): An underwater city-builder that trades resource exploitation for environmental restoration. Players work to revive dying coral reefs and restore a fragile marine ecosystem, driven by a narrative penned by acclaimed writer Rhianna Pratchett.
  • Hello Sunshine (Red Thread Games): A harsh survival mystery set against the backdrop of a fallen corporate empire. Traversing extreme climate swings, players must scavenge and craft while seeking shelter in the shadow of a colossal robot, taking cover from scorching daytime heat and relying on its warmth during freezing nights.
  • Mechjestic (Skinny Bandit): A steampunk “(f)roguelike” deckbuilder where players pilot customizable mechs to fend off an insectoid invasion. The game pairs strategic card combat with a unique refuel system designed to convert unlucky card draws into tactical advantages.
