Disney Lorcana Hyperia City Brings Music, Magic and One More Reason To Buy Too Many Booster Packs

Disney Lorcana Hyperia City Brings Music, Magic and One More Reason To Buy Too Many Booster Packs

Every time Disney Lorcana announces a new set, I tell myself the same thing. “I’ll just grab a few packs this time.” Every single time, I am lying to myself.

That’s especially true with Hyperia City, the latest expansion for Disney Lorcana, which takes players away from ancient mysteries and creeping vines and drops them into a vibrant city packed with music, colour, creativity and enough gorgeous artwork to make your wallet slightly nervous.

After spending time with the set, looking through the card list, opening packs and planning decks I’ll probably never have enough time to actually build, I think Hyperia City might be one of Lorcana’s most charming releases yet.

And honestly, it had me at Coco.

What’s Available in Disney Lorcana: Hyperia City?

  • Booster Packs & Booster Boxes – As always, Hyperia City arrives with individual booster packs and Booster Boxes. If you’re chasing Enchanted cards, specific Coco characters or just enjoy the thrill of opening packs and pretending you’ll stop after “just one more”, this is where you’ll probably spend most of your time. I certainly will.
  • Illumineer’s Trove – Hyperia City – The premium collector’s box returns once again, packed with booster packs, storage solutions, damage counters and other helpful accessories. This is still my personal pick whenever a new Lorcana set launches. I love the Troves. They look great on the shelf, they’re handy for storing cards and somehow convince me that buying more packs is a sensible financial decision.
  • Hyperia City Prerelease Box – For players heading to their local game store for prerelease events, Hyperia City includes dedicated Prerelease Boxes featuring booster packs and exclusive event goodies. There’s always something special about opening a brand-new set alongside other players who are just as excited to see what they’ve pulled
  • 2-Player Decks – If you’re looking to jump into Disney Lorcana with another player, the ready-to-play two-player option is an easy place to start.
  • Gift Box – Beast – There’s also a Beast Gift Box arriving in November, featuring a Beast – Snowfield Troublemaker promo, storage box, dividers and five booster packs.
  • Playmats & Accessories – Hyperia City also brings new playmats and accessories, including designs featuring Miguel and Snowboarding Stitch.

Finally, Coco Arrives In Lorcana

Okay. Let’s talk about my obvious highlight. Coco.

As somebody who absolutely loves the film, seeing Miguel, Dante, Mamá Coco and the Rivera family enter Disney Lorcana immediately grabbed my attention. And they actually feel at home here.

Disney Lorcana Hyperia City’s focus on music, performance and creativity gives Coco a perfect place to make its Lorcana debut, and arriving this close to Halloween certainly doesn’t hurt either. Flicking through the cards that I opened in the Illumineer’s Trove – Hyperia City (Thanks, Ravenburger!) gave the whole thing this wonderful, festival-like feeling, with characters, music and colour everywhere.

Honestly, it feels like Miguel wandered into Hyperia City with his guitar and somehow convinced half of Disney to join him. To be fair, he probably could.

There’s also something genuinely nice about recognising those little Coco details as you’re opening packs. Suddenly I’m not thinking about whether a card works in a deck. I’m staring at the artwork because it reminded me of the film.

Did this make me want certain cards even more? Yes.

Did I pull everything I wanted? Let’s not talk about that.

Hyperia City Has Its Own Personality

Something that really grabbed me about Disney Lorcana Hyperia City was the setting itself. There’s a real sense of personality running through the artwork. You’re moving between busy streets, performances, characters and quieter moments, and the whole set feels connected by this colourful city backdrop.

That variety kept me looking through the cards longer than expected.

One moment you’re focused on whatever the card actually does, then you notice something happening in the background and suddenly you’ve stopped reading altogether.

Honestly, Disney could probably turn Hyperia City into a theme park area and I’d visit.

Multiple times.

My bank account has suffered enough during this article, so let’s move on.

Ink Drops Add Another Decision to the Game

Disney Lorcana Hyperia City also introduces Ink Drops, giving players another resource to think about when planning their turns.

What I like about Ink Drops is that the basic idea feels pretty approachable. You can get your head around what they do fairly quickly, but knowing when to use them, and how to get the most out of them, is where things start getting interesting… And that’s usually where Lorcana gets me.

You understand the mechanic. You think you’ve got a pretty good idea of what you’re doing.

Then someone sitting across the table uses it in a way you hadn’t even considered, and suddenly you’re staring at their cards thinking, “Oh… that’s what you’re supposed to do with it.”

I did that more times than I care to admit at the prerelease I went to.

Honestly, that’s part of the fun of playing with a brand-new set. Everyone is still figuring things out, trying different combinations and occasionally discovering something clever completely by accident. Then, of course, someone figures it out much faster than everyone else and makes you regret sitting across the table from them.

I suspect Ink Drops are going to give players plenty to experiment with as new combinations start appearing and people work out exactly where they fit into different decks.

Meanwhile, I’ll probably still be sitting there trying to work out how many Coco cards I can squeeze into mine. Priorities!

Okay, Let’s Talk About the Big Cards

Of course, we need to talk about the cards everyone secretly hopes are hiding inside their booster packs. Disney Lorcana Hyperia City has 18 Epic, 18 Enchanted and two Iconic cards sitting above the 204-card main set.

And those two Iconics?

Mickey Mouse – Best in Town and Cinderella – Unintentional Icon.

Yep. Those are going to be the cards that make people very carefully open the last few millimetres of a booster pack while everyone at the table suddenly starts watching.

The Enchanted cards aren’t exactly letting the side down either. There are 18 in the set, including Miguel Rivera – Street Musician, Héctor Rivera – Worldwide Sensation, Pepita – Imelda’s Right Hand and an Enchanted version of Remember Me.

So yes, Coco fans like me have some serious chasing to do. My poor booster budget never really stood a chance.

What I particularly like about the Enchanted treatment this time is how well it fits Hyperia City. Ravensburger describes the style as using dramatic after-dark lighting to show the characters enjoying the city’s nightlife, which feels perfect for this set.

These are the cards where all my sensible thoughts about deck building tend to disappear.

I don’t care whether I need it. I don’t care whether it fits anything I’m currently building. I pulled the shiny pretty card. It’s going in a sleeve. Immediately.

And if I somehow manage to pull one of those Iconics? Well…

Let’s just say everyone nearby is going to know about it.

Spoiler Alert: I didn’t

The Real Problem? I Want Too Much of It

This is where Hyperia City becomes dangerous. There’s simply too much here that appeals to me.

Characters I already love. Cards I want purely because of the artwork. New mechanics I want to play around with. Coco cards I apparently now need to collect, and then those ridiculous Enchanted and Iconic cards sitting there tempting me every time I open another pack.

I’ve already caught myself putting cards aside and thinking, “I could build something around this.”

Will I? Maybe.

Will that stop me from putting another card aside five minutes later? Absolutely not.

I know I don’t need another pile of Lorcana cards. Hyperia City seems to have a different opinion.

And unfortunately, I think Hyperia City is going to win that argument.

Final Thoughts

Disney Lorcana Hyperia City has quickly become one of those Lorcana sets I simply enjoy spending time with.

Coco immediately pulled me in, but the more I opened packs, played with the cards and explored the set, the more the rest of it grabbed me too. The city setting has plenty of personality, the artwork is gorgeous, and there are already several deck ideas I’ll definitely build.

Eventually… Probably.

Playing at the prerelease also added to the fun. Everyone was figuring out the new cards and Ink Drops together, although there were definitely moments when the person sitting across from me understood them considerably better than I did.

I learnt things. Sometimes the hard way.

Then there’s the collecting side. Between the Coco cards, beautiful artwork and those big chase cards I’d love to pull, Disney Lorcana Hyperia City gives me far too many excuses to open another pack.

And that’s really what I keep coming back to. It’s just fun.

Fun opening packs. Fun discovering cards I didn’t expect to like. Fun thinking about decks I’ll probably never get around to building. And apparently, fun destroying whatever little self-control I had left when it comes to buying Lorcana.

I went into Disney Lorcana Hyperia City knowing Coco would grab me. I came away enjoying the entire set considerably more than I expected.

So now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to convince myself that I absolutely do not need another booster box…
