Late last year, during the M4 MacBook Pro announcement, Apple unveiled what is considered the biggest gaming news for Mac users to date.
A key highlight of that announcement was the revelation that Cyberpunk 2077 would be coming to Mac in ‘early 2025’. This week, CD Projekt has begun updating folders on Steam with macOS variants of Windows folders. Could this indicate that the official announcement for Cyberpunk 2077 on Mac is imminent?
Let’s delve into some of the evidence.
On January 27th, the following updates were added to Steam…
In the above image we can see that CD Projekt has added several new Depots as macOS types. Depots are logical groupings of files that are delivered to customers as a single batch. They can also be used to store previous versions of applications (games) and other resources for the application to be downloaded etc.
The number of Depots seem to match the Windows version of the game which is a good sign it’s nearly ready – although as seen above they have no files within them yet…
As seen in the above screenshot, CD Projekt has added a third launch option, currently unnamed but clearly marked with the macOS operating system.
Gaming on Mac has been possible for a few years, thanks to emulators like Whiskey (free) and the subscription-based Crossover. With the introduction of the M3 series and now the new M4, gaming on Mac has significantly improved. The ray tracing-enabled GPU cores, optimized through Apple’s Metal platform, promise even better performance. We expect to see more game ports coming to Mac in the near future.
I’ve been playing Baldur’s Gate 3, a native port to Mac, for a few weeks, and it’s been nothing but smooth sailing. I am eagerly looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077, as my old gaming PC just couldn’t handle it.
