The most overlooked aspect of any gaming set up is the humble most pad/gaming mat.
As someone that just recently spent a lot of time and money researching and upgrading his PC. I’ve gotten everything running perfectly, looking clean and crisp. I brought peripherals that look and perform at the highest level. My setup was looking complete and quite sleek.
Yet, then I look down and still have that same old gaming mat. I know like many of you, my gaming mat was something that was given to me or I picked it up from a convention, I don’t even remember. It is getting old, it is a mesh of colors and made my desk look messier than it was. I thought I need to change this thing, then the Razer Gigantus V2 appeared in my inbox and I knew this could be the one.
Razer is due to release the Razer Gigantus V2 at the end of the financial year (Late June/Early July) and prove not all gaming mats are the same!
Design
The Razer Gigantus V2 comes in a variety of sizes, so whether you want a normal mouse pad or one that covers the largest of desks, Razer has you covered.
Made from thick, high-density rubber foam with a textured micro-weave cloth surface and is available in 4 sizes. These sizes are:
- M (360 x 275 x 3mm)
- L (450 x 400 x 3mm)
- XXL (940 x 410 x 4mm)
- 3XL (1,200 x 550 x 4mm)
Razer could have gone crazy with the design of these mats. They could have put massive Razer logos with a futuristic black and green design and yet they didn’t.
They kept the Razer Gigantus V2, a sleek black with their signature green on the exposed foam along the sides and a small ‘Razer’ in the top counter. It is this level of restraint and clean design that makes this gaming mat beautiful. As it crisp design will broaden its appeal to not just gamers, but to businesses and families alike.
When I first put it on my desk (black desk, boring I know), it just has a more professional look to it and it seems to streamline the look of my desk also. But it is the touch of Razer Green that takes it from boring black on black, to having the right amount of character but with an overall sleek and stylish design.
Performance
The first thing I noticed when using the Razer Gigantus V2, was my mouse would fly across the screen, to the point it was uncontrollable. As my previous mouse pad was cheap, I had to always have the DPI set to maximum and continually have to pick up my mouse to reposition it.
With the Gigantus V2, I turned the DPI down by half and make slight controlled movements to smoothly aim, or control my character while gaming. As the mouse slides beautiful and quickly with only the slightest movement, but stopping and making slight aiming adjustments are easy too. As the gaming mat is so responsive to your movements.
For even more control for micro-movements, I found pushing down on the mat ever so slightly allows for even more control and allow micro-movements. I found this out while editing a video for a friend, I found pushing down into the 4mm high-density foam allows me to scroll through video down to the millisecond for the smallest of adjustment. It allows for cleaner cuts and better results.
Yes, I hear people saying, ‘you could have just turned down the DPI of the mouse.’ Yes, you are right, but as I only used this trick 3 or 4 times during the 2-hour editing session. It was a handy thing to be able to do on the fly….. plus, I know me, I would have forgot to reset it back and spend weeks thinking my mouse was playing up. 🙂
Improvements from V1 to V2
Having previously used the Razer Gigantus V1, there are some clear improvements in version 2.
There is no more raised logo, allowing for 100% usage of the gaming mat. The base is thinner and much softer, actually, the comfort level of the Gigantus V2 surprised me. As considering how thin the base is on the XXL mat is, I noticed the difference within days of using it.
There are more sizes and the fact they are rectangular and not square is a huge selling point. As is it no longer just a mouse mat, but a more all rounding gaming mat. One thing that was mentioned to me by a friend, is they will normally only buy a gaming mat with anti-fay stitching. So hopefully they release an Elite or Black Edition like V1. So, all gamers will be happy.
Final Thoughts
From the clean, sleek lines that beautiful fit my desk and will fit almost every desk perfectly. To the high density, supportive thin foam, and the responsive micro-weave cloth surface. I can’t say enough great things about the Razer Gigantus V2.
And with a price range of $19.90 for the medium and $92.90 for the 3XL. These gaming mats are very affordable, especially with the level of class and sleekness they will add to your desk either at home or in the office.
