How to Play
Normally here I would write about the setup & the How to play. It is normally a boring necessity of most reviews. Yet, why write what is quicker and easier to watch?
As 93 Made Games has released this detailed how-to video, which will do a much better job than I could ever do
First Impression
Getting the message from 93 Made Games regarding a new game had me dancing around the room. Especially as that game was a Viewpoint; a game originally released in 2009 & a game whose gameplay impressed me.
I was so glad to hear they were back in the board game industry, as 6 years ago, my first ever review was their game No Fish. But since then, 93 Made Games has been on hiatus.
Until now…. Let’s see if they have they’re eye on the prize with this game!
Gameplay
Viewpoint Revisioned is a game I have played many times. I didn’t want to be biased, so I invited one of my poker buddies over & wanted to see what he thought. As he is a lover of card games, but if it can’t be played with an actual deck of cards, he doesn’t like them.
This was a big test, as I have a non-board gamer playing a game I have loved for years.
I showed him the how-to video, we did an open hand first game & he wasn’t that impressed. It seemed way too easy…. So, my ego may have gotten the best of me & I got annoyed by that comment & didn’t hold back. I beat him 5 games straight, stealing his cards, bluffing him & showing him how “easy” this game truly was.
He won game 7 & by that point, he was hooked. We played a few more games… or so we thought. 3 and half hours later we suddenly realised the time. We were due to play poker at the local pub & were running super late & if it wasn’t for a few friends signing us up early, we would have missed the night.
I didn’t have the same luck playing poker as I did with Viewpoint Revisioned. I bombed out first-round & so did two of my other friends…. I had Viewpoint Revisioned in my bag, so thought why not, I know one of them is an avid board gamer & loves playing more complex games. I thought let see them play together & see how he likes it. I didn’t read them the rules, I didn’t tell him anything about it. I let them play while I ate a parma next to them (I missed Dinner because of Viewpoint Revisioned, so I was starving).
They picked up quickly, & with games quickening as they went on. He couldn’t have been more shocked, how a simple card game could have so much depth. He said exactly what I thought of this game; it is a set of cards that plays like a much more complex game.
That is the thing with this game, it is quick to learn, easy to think you’ve mastered it & extremely hard to master. And it’s that reason why I love it! As it is that depth of gameplay & ability to grow with the player but doesn’t punish players of different abilities.
Art
The art of Viewpoint Revisioned was the one thing that let the last one down. It was like stick figures with eyes, & it was the one thing that I hoped they would improve for the release.
And improve it they did!
Gone are those Black and white cards, say hello to the beautiful coloured, unique world. The art went from missing the mark to telling a beautiful in-depth story in each card. With several games coming over the next 12-18 months, this world & story will continue to grow. Expanding on the Viewniverse & bringing with it, some brands we may recongise.
Plus, I love that they have the same artist throughout all the new games, add the cohesion that will make it pop while on the game store shelves
Final Thoughts
Viewpoint Revisioned is a game I have loved for so long but had some issues with the art & with the gameplay that could quite often be one-sided when you get a roll-on. Yet, 93 Made Games have gone back to the table redefined the gameplay, overhauled the art in a massive way. Making a great game even better.
If you want a game that can be thrown into a bag, played quickly, has a great replay value & plays like a game triple its size. If you can en-“Vision” Viewpoint Revisioned in your collection, then keep your “Eye” on Kickstarter…. Sorry I needed to put in at least one vision/eye pun.
Viewpoint Revisioned hits Kickstarter on the 17th of June & you can back it here
