The latest crossover in Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond series brings the thrilling world of Assassin’s Creed to the card game. And where else could you hold an event for the first look at this exciting neoclassical styled set? No where expect for the Melbourne State Library.
As you walk towards this beautiful neoclassical building, it looked like it was out of an Assassin’s Creed game. The only thing missing was Ezio Auditore da Firenze standing on the roof with a bale of hay beneath him.
I loved the Assassin Creed games & I hoped Wizards of the Coast would create an exciting fusion that brought together the fans of both franchises into a set. And boy did they! This set skillfully integrates the rich narratives and characters of Assassin’s, offering a fresh and engaging experience for all Magic: the Gathering players, new or old!
Theme and Mechanics
The Assassin’s Creed set introduces innovative mechanics that reflect the essence of the video game series, none more prefect than the mechanic, Freerunning, which captures the agility and stealth of the Assassins & couldn’t aligns more perfectly with this set, had they written it for this set!
Freerunning allows players to cast certain cards at a lower mana cost if their creatures inflict direct damage on an opponent, and as an assassin, damaging your opponents is probably quiet high on your agenda.
Additionally, the set heavy features Equipment Artifacts inspired by the iconic tools and weapons from Assassin’s Creed. These artifacts are awesome! For the simple reason, they are stunning & it reminds me so much of the art book I got when I pre-ordered one of the games.
Gameplay Experience
Playing Magic: The Gathering – Assassin’s Creed within the closed & dimly lit neoclassical styling of the Melbourne State library, gave the night an air of secrecy & misery that just added to the excitement & immersiveness of the night.
As the set feels both familiar and innovative. The new mechanics blend seamlessly and interchangeable between Assassin’s Creed & Magic: the Gathering. At times forgetting I was even playing Magic: the Gathering & not an Assassin’s Creed TCG. Which after this set, I wouldn’t be against!
Art and Design
The artwork in this set is stunning, with each card featuring detailed illustrations that vividly bring the Assassin’s Creed universe to life. From the bustling streets of Renaissance Italy to the ancient pyramids of Egypt, the art captures the diverse settings and historical periods that define the franchise.
Yet, it’s the Showcase card art of this set, that is just a chef’s kiss! These cards are something special, think of your favourite character & see them brought to life in a way that is just breathtaking. I actually want to get all 28 showcase cards for no other reason, that I love the Assassin’s Creed Franchise.
Conclusion
The Magic: The Gathering Assassin’s Creed set is a remarkable blend of design and creativity, merging two beloved franchises into a cohesive and engaging set. Along with some amazing reprints that get the Assassin’s Creed flavouring, that fit so perfectly that you forget it is a reprint.
Whether you are a seasoned MTG player or a newcomer drawn by the Assassin’s Creed theme, this set offers a rich and rewarding gameplay experience, some of the most beautiful cards & some great reprints. Highly recommended for both collectors and competitive players alike.
